A COMMUNITY EVENT TO HIGHLIGHT RITES OF PASSAGE AS A WAY

TO SUPPORT TEENS THROUGH THE CHALLENGES OF THIER LIFE STAGE

Youth Participant at his Welcome Home Ceremony, 2019

Being a teenager can be hard. Parenting a teen can be just as difficult. Even in ideal circumstances, teenagerhood is marked by risk-taking, a rejection of familial expectations and values, an intensification of emotional reactivity, and exploration outside of a safeguarded environment. It is also a critical time for a young person to learn about who they are and what they want to see in the world. How can we as caregivers support them in a way to which they can be receptive? How can we encourage their growth while they are not-quite-children, not-quite-adult? How can we keep ourselves sane while they explore this burgeoning sense of power and selfhood?

On Saturday, May 6 at the Amazon Community Center Main Hall in Eugene, Oregon, Rob Miller, executive director and lead guide for Cascadia Quest, will discuss the challenges and frustrations parents so often encounter in raising teens–including contemporary issues related to pandemic impacts, climate crisis, technology and social media–while normalizing these challenges within the context of his work as a rites of passage wilderness guide. Rob will share share tips and strategies for moving beyond struggle to a place supportive of the young person’s maturation into young adulthood. He will also give ideas and options for creating or taking part in a rite of passage for your teen.
